The company’s gift shop features gourmet seasonings for oysters and oyster-inspired works by Eastern Shore artisans. It also hosts an Oysters a la Carte event for the public each fall.
In 1985, Pamela Barefoot had a dream to move to Virginia’s rural Eastern Shore and survive on her creativity. The peninsula, bounded by the Chesapeake Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, offered a blank canvas for entrepreneurial opportunity, inspiring Pamela to start her own business. Driving around the back roads, she envisioned items such as spice blends for clam and crab, two seafood species prevalent in the Chesapeake. After a successful 31 years Pamela decided that she had found just the person she was looking for to acquire her business, Eastern Shore native Elizabeth Lankford. Elizabeth had always been looking for an opportunity to return home to the Eastern Shore, and realized the opportunity that presented itself in purchasing the company. Having always been a longtime fan of Blue Crab Bay’s brand and high-quality products she looks forward to leading the company and expanding its national reach.
Today, under Lankford’s guidance, Blue Crab Bay Co. continues to offers award-winners such as Sting Ray® Spicy Bloody Mary Mixer with Ocean Clam Juice; coastal themed snacks such as Barnacles® spicy snack mix; an extensive line of seasonings for oysters, crabs, and other seafood; dip kits; and fishnet-wrapped gift packs. Its lineup also includes Blue Crab Stoneware, which features kitchenware, dinnerware, and serve ware with a striking hand-painted blue crab motif created by Eastern Shore artisan José Dovis.
In addition to all of Blue Crab Bay Co.‘s products, the company’s gift shop offers works by numerous local artists as well as Eastern Shore wines and other Virginia’s Finest food items. The property includes a picnic pavilion, pet walking area, and public restrooms. In the fall, the company hosts Oysters a la Carte, an event that highlights the region’s aquaculture and viticulture. It also participates in the Harvest Hosts RV program.
