Here in Virginia, oysters are more than just a delicacy—they’re a way of life.

As the largest producer of farm-raised oysters on the East Coast, Virginia is home to a thriving oyster industry, thanks to the dedication of our watermen and aquaculture experts. In 2015 alone, more than 135 million oysters were planted, reinforcing their significance to our economy, culture, and culinary traditions.

To celebrate and support this growing industry, the Virginia Oyster Trail was established in 2015 as a network connecting oyster lovers with the purveyors, restaurants, and raw bars that bring these briny treasures to the table. But the Trail is more than just oysters—it’s an invitation to explore Virginia’s coastal way of life through eco-tourism, cultural experiences, and unforgettable flavors. Along the way, visitors can discover charming inns, art venues, guided tours, and more, creating a journey of discovery that deepens their connection to the Chesapeake Bay and its rich heritage.

As a nonprofit organization, the Virginia Oyster Trail is committed to strengthening local economies, supporting watermen, and fostering sustainable growth. Led by an industry-driven, volunteer-led Board of Directors, we are grateful for the generous support of individuals and organizations that share our mission.
